Heimbach presents a lullaby app with the hypnotizing look and feel of a mandala
Seattle, WA: Seattle author William Heimbach, and illustrator Angelina Tolentino have released a children’s book app, based on their successfully crowd-funded book, “A Whale Who Dreamt of a Snail.” The app is available for iPhone 5 & later, iPad 2 & later, and iPod Touch 5th gen. Specifically designed to be one of the first apps a child will experience, it is free of advertising or in-app purchases.
A Whale Who Dreamt of a Snail is a goodnight story that inspires young children to think about their dreams, while playfully showing them a diversity of animals and environments around the world. The app was thoughtfully designed so that even the youngest child will be able to navigate easily without getting lost or confused. Parents and children alike will delight in the elegantly painted illustrations. A sprinkle of animation brings the pictures to life, along with narration and background music. A “Read-to-Yourself” option is included.
William and Angelina decided early to go the self-publishing route. “We didn’t want to wait to have our book approved by a large publishing company. We believed in it enough to move forward, using our own money and crowd-funding,” says Heimbach, who wrote the story. Heimbach and Tolentino raised $11,129 for the initial short-run digital printing and app development via Kickstarter. “It was a shoe-string budget for a self-published book, but we were able to do quite a bit with it,” says Tolentino. Portland-based Purple Bottle Media was brought on board to develop the app.
A Whale Who Dreamt of a Snail App is available on the App Store for $2.99 for iPhone 5 & later, iPad 2 & later, and iPod Touch 5th gen. OS.6.1 or higher.

Hey everyone! By now the vast majority of you have received your rewards and we hope you are enjoying the book. If you haven't yet, we are probably missing your address and have messaged you for it. We've gotten some really nice messages from friends and it means so much, especially seeing their little ones reading the book! This project really defines the meaning of "kickstart" - up until now it seemed like a pipe dream, but already we are planning our next projects, and how to improve on the process.
Speaking of improvements, it has come to our attention that perhaps the hardcover books were not packaged sufficiently and at least one arrived damaged. If you have received a damaged hardcover, please let us know.

Check out Phil's Bindery chopping up some of the prefect bind soft cover books.
Very excited to say Gina picked up the first run of softcover books from the bindery yesterday!
It's July and we owe everyone an update!!! The last two months have been spent furiously creating the illustrations, and they are looking amazing. We asked for input from folks on Facebook and got some fun ideas to work into the paintings. We planned to have them all finished by the first on July, but they need a little extra time to make them all as perfect as we want them to be, so we are expecting them all the be finished in mid-July. But even with this extension, we feel sure that the book will still be ready sometime in August.
We also had a very good meeting with a local printer who gave us some ideas and pricing, so now we are just looking into the pricing for binding. Then we will be reviewing those prices against print-on-demand online pricing. Our hope is still to print locally, and so far the pricing looks good.
After a much needed visit with my family, I am back in the studio and hand painting the illustrations. I have the storyboard up on the wall, a schedule planned out on a large calendar, and today I worked on the desert background. I am hiding some dreamlike images onto each illustration (like a sleeping cat in the rocks). If you have any fun ideas for hidden images, leave us a message on our Facebook page, and please "Like" us if you haven't already.
When the book comes out, you can see if any of your ideas made it in!
When we decided to self-publish and use Kickstarter as our fundraising platform, we had no idea if it would work or not. But we had immense faith in our project and in our community of friends and family, and felt like it was the best way to go. We are beyond grateful for the support that we have received and we are really excited to be able to bring this book to life!
Now comes the fun part (and the most work) - finishing all the illustrations and putting the book together. We have a 2-month schedule for illustration and part of the funds raised allows for focusing on only that for the next two months. Since we have an aggressive schedule for these, you will be seeing regular updates with the illustrations as they come together. Backers will be able to see the color studies that will turn into the final illustrations.
Then we go into production mode, getting the book ready for ePub formats, and sending out print-ready files for limited printed editions for our backers and for marketing. This should take most of July, and then we will start getting our rewards out!
So a very huge THANK YOU! We are making this book because of you! - Gina and Bill
Thank you, thank you, thank you! A big old whale hug and snail kisses to all of you who believed in us and backed our project. We are so excited that we can get this book made now! Our backers can look forward to updates with little sneak peeks of the illustrations as they are being created.
xoxo, Gina and Bill
We are very close to the halfway mark, thanks to our generous backers! We are so grateful for your pledges and for sharing the project with your friends. Hopefully we can surpass the 50%-funded milestone before the end of the week. Look out for some special additional rewards coming up soon!
Again, thank you for all of your support. We are truly honored.
Bill & Gina
We put our project out there and we are amazed by the response. It's very humbling but gives us such a boost. We're continuing to work towards getting this book done and we are so thankful to you for helping us get there.
